What is a documentary?
A documentary is a film that attempts to document reality. The scenes will be arranged together but are not scripted, and the people in documentaries are not actors. Sometimes documentaries may have a presenter or a voice-over who describes what people are seeing in the documentary, or sometimes the footage speaks for itself.
Documentary is the earliest form of any film that involved single shots of events such as a boat leaving the shore, these were known as ‘actuality’ films. Propaganda films were also early forms of the documentary.
Over the years the documentary film has become more popular and high profile, but it still far less popular than the action or adventure film genre. Most documentary films these days are focused on political or controversial views, such as Supersize me or an inconvenient truth.
